On the first warm day of the year, have you gone outside with a glass of lemonade, ready to soak in the sun…only to realize your outdoor furniture has spent the winter collecting dust and spiderwebs?
Let’s look at a step-by-step guide to getting your furniture clean again.
Step 1: Clear the deck
Before you get the hose, remove all cushions, pillows, and decorative throws. This is the perfect time to check the labels on your textiles. Many outdoor cushion covers are machine-washable, but if yours aren't, don't worry - we’ll get to them later. Set the fabrics aside while you focus on the frames of the furniture.
Step 2: Dry brush
Before getting anything wet, use a soft-bristle brush or a dry cloth to whisk away loose debris. This includes:
- Cobwebs in the corners of chair legs
- Dried leaves stuck in crevices
- Loose pollen and dust
If you have a vacuum with a brush attachment, use it! It’s much more effective at pulling dust out of tight weaves than a cloth.
Step 3: Mix your solution
You don’t need harsh chemicals to get great results. In fact, gentle is usually better for the longevity of your furniture. Mix a bucket of warm water with some mild dish soap.
- For wood: Use mild soap and water. Avoid power washers, as they can damage the wood grain.
- For metal or plastic: You can add half a cup of white vinegar to the mix to help cut through hard to clean areas.
- For wicker: Don’t soak the material – use a damp sponge.
Step 4: Clean and rinse
Dip a soft sponge or microfiber cloth into your soapy water and start from the top, working your way down. For hard-to-clean spots - like bird droppings or tree sap - let the soapy water sit for a minute before gently scrubbing.
Once you’ve cleaned the piece, rinse it with a garden hose. Don’t use a high-pressure nozzle too close to the furniture, since it can strip paint or damage the finish.
Step 5: Refresh the cushions
If your cushions aren't machine-washable, you can clean them by hand:
- Spot treat: Use a mixture of soap and water on a soft brush to wash away stains.
- Rinse: Spray them down with the hose until the water runs clear.
- The drying rule: Always stand cushions up on their sides to dry. This allows the water to drain out the bottom and prevents mold from forming in the filling. Very important!
Making it last
To keep your furniture looking its best all season long, try these tips:
- Cover up: If you know a storm is coming, or if you're heading out of town, use furniture covers.
- Quick wipe: Once a week, wipe tables with a damp cloth to prevent buildup.
- Protect the feet: Check the plastic caps on the bottom of chair legs. If they’re missing, the metal can rust and leave permanent stains on your patio floor.
