It’s sunny and warm, your friends are coming over, you’re excited to make an outdoor meal…but when you open your grill, what do you see?

If it’s the remains of last year’s meal, we’re here to help.

Everyone wants some delicious food, but no one wants to eat off of a dirty grill. Not only does a clean grill make meals look more appetizing, but it also prevents flareups and extends its life. Let’s look at how to get your grill equipment clean – before your company arrives.

Step 1: Get your supplies

No matter what kind of grill you have, you need to start with some tools:

  • A grill brush or a wooden scraper
  • Dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • Aluminum foil
  • Vegetable oil

Step 2: Cleaning by grill type

Gas grills

Gas grills are convenient, but they have a lot of parts that collect grease.

  1. Turn the grill on high for about 15 minutes to burn off any residue into ash.
  2. Once it’s cool enough to touch, but still warm, scrub the grates.
  3. Check the burner tubes for any clogs. Bugs often get into these small openings during the off-season. Use a toothpick or a wire to clear the holes.
  4. Slide out the grease tray and replace the disposable liner, or wash the permanent tray.

Charcoal grills

These have a more simple design, but the ashes can be messy.

  1. Once the grill is completely cold, remove all old ash.
  2. Use a brush to scrape the carbon flakes (the black stuff that looks like peeling paint) off the inside.
  3. Soak the grates in hot soapy water to loosen the grease before scrubbing.
  4. Scrub them, let them dry, and replace.

Pellet grills

These require more work because of the electronic factor and fire pot.

  1. Use a shop vacuum to remove ash from the fire pot and the bottom of the barrel.
  2. Carefully wipe down the internal temperature probe with a damp cloth.
  3. Don’t spray water directly into where the wood pellets are stored, since moisture will ruin them.

Step 3: Finishing touches

Once the internal parts are clean, wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap.

For stainless steel models, use a specialized stainless steel cleaner to make it shine.

Finally, season your grates by wiping them with a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil, since this helps create a non-stick surface for your first meal.
